Brothers and Sisters,
 
As we journey through this time of pandemic and separation we are now confronted with a new reality; civil unrest and an uncertain future.  Images on television and the Internet show people reacting out of fear and anger, primarily fear.  We try to process all that is going on without the comfort of “normalcy.”  Stores are still closed, we still need masks, we are encouraged to follow the norms of social distancing; the average person could well ask, what is going on?  We all ask, where is God in the midst of these difficult times?
 
Hopefully these difficult times and the hard questions we all ask motivate us to enter more deeply into the mystery of our faith.  Meditation on the life of Christ and the people around him can help us understand the times in which we live.  As a human man, Jesus was fearful about the possibility of crucifixion and death and yet he remained, as always, faithful.  As a result, the world is redeemed by Christ’s fidelity!  Imagine Mary standing at the foot of the cross watching her son suffer and die.  She had given birth to this man, she raised him, she fed and nurtured him; and in these moments of suffering God gave her another chance to be faithful, to say yes.  And she did say yes, she remained faithful!  
 
These trying times offer us a chance to grow in our fidelity to Christ.  When putting on a mask be reminded that you are doing it because of concern for the  wellbeing of others.  As we see televised images of people involved in incredible and destructive behavior instead of reacting out of your own fear, see suffering frightened people reacting badly.  We can react with the  compassion of Christ himself.  Broken glass or a burned out car can be replaced, but the fear, anger, or rage that caused the bad behavior must be healed.  Christ gives us the Holy Spirit so that we can become  healers.  People who consciously think about healing, compassion, and the wellbeing of others are people who are on the road to the Kingdom of God.  Let us be grateful for the grace to be like Christ!
 
I want to thank you for your continued financial generosity to the parish.  Although total revenue is reduced, we are doing ok.  The St. Vincent de Paul Society continues to help many distressed families with food.  Your generosity to the “Pay it Forward” program has allowed a number of families to be helped financially.  In excess of $20,000 has been collected through “Pay it Forward.”  This program will remain in effect for the foreseeable future in case there is a second stimulus package and people would like to donate.  Your donations to the Gabriel Project have helped a large number of struggling pregnant women.  
 
The life of the parish continues.  At almost all Masses you will see children receiving First Communion—please keep them in your prayers.  This past weekend we celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation for a number of people who had been waiting since Easter.  Plans are being made for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for the young people who have been in preparation—we are waiting to see what phase II of the reopening plan will entail.  There has been a great increase in the number of confessions on Saturday afternoon, almost as many as before the pandemic.  Daily Mass is being celebrated as normal.  Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday morning around twenty or twenty-five people come.  This can be a good time for people to come if they are nervous about coming on the weekend.  The number of people coming for Sunday Mass is slowly increasing.  I would point out that the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass is still in effect.  Vulnerable adults and older people should exercise caution.  People coming to Mass have been cooperative and are following the recommended safeguards.  Coming to Mass is relatively safe.
 
Religious Education will resume in the Fall.  The details are still being worked out.  It may be that if the virus is still present we will be forced to offer instruction online.  We may also be able to offer a single class for a particular age group (with proper social distancing protocol being observed).  This class could be live streamed to students not attending.  Religious Education is a primary priority of the parish.  We are also in conversation with other parishes and observing what they are doing.  Perhaps we can combine efforts with some other parishes for an online program.
 
It is likely that the protocols governing Sunday Mass will change in the near future.  You will be advised when that happens and what the changes entail.  We will work to implement any change as fast as reasonably possible.  We will implement any change with full explanation so that everyone remains safe.  Coming to Mass and the celebration of the sacraments should bring hope and consolation to people, never fear.
 
On a personal note, I celebrated my 40 ^th anniversary of priesthood on March 29 ^th.  We had been planning a parish celebration but that did not happen due to the COVID-19 virus.  When things return to “normal” we will do something.  Priesthood is a gift of Christ to the whole Church, not just one individual.  I look forward to celebrating with you.
 
Please remember in your prayers the many people who live in constant fear.  Pray that they might understand God’s providential love for them.  Pray that they might have hope for a bright future.  Pray for our nation during this time and for the aversion of violence.  Pray for your parish.  I will be praying for you.

Hermanos y hermanas,
 
Mientras viajamos a través de este tiempo de pandemia y separación, ahora nos enfrentamos a una nueva realidad; disturbios civiles y un futuro incierto. Las imágenes en televisión e internet muestran a personas reaccionando por miedo y enojo, principalmente por miedo. Tratamos de procesar todo lo que sucede sin la comodidad de la "normalidad". Las tiendas aún están cerradas, todavía necesitamos mascarillas, se nos alienta a seguir las normas de distanciamiento social; la persona promedio bien podría preguntar, ¿qué está pasando? Todos preguntamos, ¿dónde está Dios en medio de estos tiempos difíciles?
 
Esperemos que estos tiempos difíciles y las preguntas difíciles que todos hacemos nos motiven a profundizar en el misterio de nuestra fe. La meditación sobre la vida de Cristo y las personas que lo rodean pueden ayudarnos a comprender los tiempos en que vivimos. Como hombre humano, Jesús temía la posibilidad de la crucifixión y la muerte y, sin embargo, permaneció fiel, como siempre. ¡Como resultado, el mundo es redimido por la fidelidad de Cristo! Imagina a María parada al pie de la cruz mirando a su hijo sufrir y morir. Ella había dado a luz a este hombre, lo crio, lo alimentó y lo educó; y en estos momentos de sufrimiento, Dios le dio otra oportunidad de ser fiel, de decir que sí. Y ella dijo que sí, ¡se mantuvo fiel!
 
Estos tiempos difíciles nos ofrecen la oportunidad de crecer en nuestra fidelidad a Cristo. Cuando se ponga una mascarilla, recuerde que lo está haciendo debido a la preocupación por el bienestar de los demás. A medida que vemos imágenes televisadas de personas involucradas en un comportamiento increíble y destructivo, en lugar reaccionan por su propio miedo, vemos a personas asustadas que reaccionan mal. Podemos reaccionar con la compasión de Cristo mismo. Los vidrios rotos o un auto quemado pueden reemplazarse, pero el miedo, la ira, o el coraje que causo el mal comportamiento deben ser sanados. Cristo nos da el Espíritu Santo para que podamos llegar a ser  sanadores. Las personas que piensan conscientemente en la sanación, la compasión y el bienestar de los demás son personas que están en el camino hacia el Reino de Dios. ¡Agradezcamos la gracia de ser como Cristo!
 
Quiero agradecerles por su continua generosidad financiera para con la parroquia. Aunque los ingresos totales se reducen, estamos bien. La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul continúa ayudando a muchas familias angustiadas con alimentos. Su generosidad con el programa "Pay it Forward" ha permitido que varias familias reciban ayuda financiera. Se recaudaron más de 20,000 a través de "Pay it Forward". Este programa seguirá en vigencia en el futuro previsible en caso de que haya un segundo paquete de estímulo y las personas deseen donar. Sus donaciones también han ayudado al Proyecto Gabriel para ayudar a un gran número de mujeres embarazadas con dificultades.
 
La vida de la parroquia continúa. En casi todas las Misas verán niños que reciben por primera vez a Jesús en la Eucaristía, por favor manténganlos en sus oraciones. El pasado fin de semana celebramos los Sacramentos del Bautismo, Eucaristía y Confirmación para varias personas que habían estado esperando desde la Pascua. Se están haciendo planes para la celebración del Sacramento de la Confirmación para los jóvenes adolescentes que se han estado preparando; estamos esperando ver qué implicará la fase II del plan de reapertura. Ha habido un gran aumento en el número de confesiones el sábado por la tarde, casi tantas como antes de la pandemia. La Misa diaria se celebra de manera normal. Miércoles y jueves por la noche y viernes por la mañana, vienen unas veinte o veinticinco personas. Este puede ser un buen momento para que las personas vengan si se sienten nerviosas de venir en fin de semana. El número de personas que vienen a la Misa dominical aumenta lentamente. Quisiera señalar que la dispensa de la obligación de asistir a Misa todavía está vigente. Los adultos vulnerables y las personas mayores deben tener precaución. Las personas que vienen a Misa han cooperado y están siguiendo las recomendaciones necesarias. Venir a Misa es relativamente seguro.
 
La educación religiosa se reanudará en el otoño. Los detalles aún se están resolviendo. Es posible que, si el virus aún está presente, nos veremos obligados a ofrecer instrucciones por internet. También podemos ofrecer una clase única para un grupo de edad en particular (observando un protocolo de distanciamiento social adecuado). Esta clase podría transmitirse en vivo a los estudiantes que no asisten. La educación religiosa es una prioridad principal de la parroquia. También estamos conversando con otras parroquias y observando lo que están haciendo. Quizás podamos combinar esfuerzos con otras parroquias para un programa en línea.
 
Es probable que los protocolos que rigen la Misa dominical cambien en el futuro cercano. Se le avisará cuando eso suceda y lo qué estos cambios implican. Trabajaremos para implementar cualquier cambio lo más rápido posible. Cualquier cambio se implementará con una explicación completa para que todos permanezcan seguros. Venir a Misa y a la celebración de los sacramentos debería traer esperanza y consuelo para que la gente no tenga temor.
 
En una nota personal, celebré mi 40 aniversario del sacerdocio el 29 de marzo. Habíamos planeado una celebración parroquial, pero eso no sucedió debido al virus covid19. Cuando las cosas vuelvan a ser "normales" haremos algo. El sacerdocio es un don de Cristo para toda la Iglesia, no solo para un individuo. Espero celebrarlo con usted.
 
Por favor, recuerde en sus oraciones a las muchas personas que viven en constante temor. Ore para que puedan entender el amor providencial de Dios por ellos. Ore para que tengan esperanza en un futuro brillante. Ore por nuestra nación durante este tiempo y por el fin de la violencia. Ore por su parroquia. Yo orare por usted.
